Definition of an Art Journal

What exactly is an Art Journal?

Despite the explosion of popularity in Art Journaling during the past few years, locating a concrete description proved to be difficult.  Webster's Dictionary doesn't include a definition for "Art Journaling".  It does, however, define "Art" as the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects and "Journal" as a record of experiences, ideas or reflections kept regularly for private use.

Trolling the Internet I found the following definition:  An Art Journal is a collection of words, images and colors.  Hmmm...that's rather vague.  Wikopedia:  An Art Diary, Art Journal or Visual Journal is a daily journal kept by artists, often containing words & sketches & occasionally including mixed media elements such as collage.

To me an Art Journal is a journal kept by artists and/or crafters to record their artistic journey, to express their thoughts and opinions, to practice their skills and techniques, to rough out or explore future works of art, and to experiment or play with different mediums, tools and/or techniques.

In other words - all that and the kitchen sink!  I believe part of the reason that Art Journaling has become so popular is because it's so adaptable.  Each person journals for a unique set of reasons.  There are no rules!  It is your Art Journal and you can use however and whenever you want!

For the month of February I plan to focus on Art Journaling!  Be sure to check back for more information about getting started, supplies, finding inspiration and much more!
